Hansen's sonata is a Romantic favourite for cornet and trumpet. The energetic Allegro con brio, the warm, song-like Andante and the spirited Allegro con anima together show both the lyrical and the virtuosic side of the instrument.
It is a wonderful movement for developing tone, phrasing and breath control, and it can also be performed on its own in concerts and recitals. Play along to practise the long lines and blend with the piano harmonies.
Practice tips
- Use a warm, round sound with gentle vibrato.
- Shape each phrase towards its high point.
- Keep the soft passages supported and in tune.
